There are three main fields of practice within the discipline of physiotherapy: musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespirological. Musculoskeletal physiotherapy promotes healing of soft-tissue injury and maximizes the rate of safe return to function. Neurological physiotherapy accelerates the return to normal movement and function after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological illness. Cardiorespirological physiotherapy attempts to improve breathing and prevent lung infection for those with respirological conditions. Also, customized aerobic exercise programs are used with techniques in energy conservation to improve the functional capacity of clients with heart or lung problems.
Physiotherapy treatment may include exercise, manual therapy, electrical modalities, work hardening, as well as education and home exercise. An emphasis is placed on what the client can do for themselves and with regards to prevention of future injuries or disability. A physiotherapist emphasizes independence and encourages clients to take responsibility for their rehabilitation.
